A long-serving leader from 1st Standlake and Cokethorpe (Sea Scouts), Pete Craddock, has been honoured with the Silver Wolf, the highest and most prestigious award bestowed by The Scout Association. This exceptional accolade recognises his "services of the most exceptional character" and stands as a testament to a lifetime of dedicated and selfless commitment to Scouting.
The Silver Wolf is a personal gift of the Chief Scout and is considered the pinnacle of recognition for adult volunteers across the global Scouting movement. Created by Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell, it is a globally revered award, with only a small number granted each year for extraordinary and sustained service. This makes Mr. Craddock's honour a monumental achievement, reflecting his profound impact on generations of young people in Oxfordshire.
Known affectionately as "Group" to many, and "Simba" to his Cubs, Pete Craddock's influence extends far beyond a simple list of roles. His service history is so extensive that it had to be abridged on the new digital scout management system. He was previously awarded the Bar to the Silver Acorn in 2012, and since then, his commitment has only deepened. This includes gaining his Royal Yachting Association Power Boating Licence and mentoring a new generation of leaders. Since his last award, he has mentored six new Cub Leaders, all of whom remain with the group, and has welcomed nearly 300 new Cub Scouts into the section.
"Pete's dedication is an inspiration to all of us," said Chris Watkins, the Group Lead Volunteer. "The characters and investment in Scouting that were recognised with his last award 13 years ago have not diminished; they have continued and thrived and been instilled and enthused in others."
Despite recent health challenges and a less active role in other sections, Pete’s passion for Cubs remains undiminished. He attends every meeting, guiding sixes and leading the pack with the same energy and enthusiasm as ever.
The nomination for the Silver Wolf described him as a "lifelong grass roots and unsung hero of the scouting movement." This prestigious honour is not just a personal triumph for Pete Craddock; it is an incredible honour for the entire 1st Standlake and Cokethorpe (Sea Scouts), a Royal Navy recognised group and a shining example of the dedication that underpins the Scouting community.
