The annual RN Recognised Sea Scouts Explorer Camp has even more chances to gain qualifications.  Read on …

Where.  The camp will be held at HMS EXCELLENT, Whale Island, Portsmouth with accommodation alongside in HMS BRISTOL.  You can make arrangements with us to be collected from the station or ferry terminal if you are arriving by public transport.

When.  Arrive by 1200 on Saturday 26 October.  The camp ends on the morning of Friday 1 November.  Yes, Friday; please make sure parents do not wait until Saturday to collect their offspring!

Cost.  The cost for activities camp or water activities courses is £90 per head.  The competent crew course costs £100 (to cover extra food and harbour dues.)  The fee for leaders is £15.  Food, accommodation, activities costs and certificates are included (there is no need to bring bedding.)

Leaders we need you!  We rely on Scout leaders to make this event successful and are always on the lookout for new members to join our friendly team.  Obviously, activities leaders are needed but we also need people in the ‘engine room’ of the camp organizing the administration, accommodation and pastoral care of the Explorers.  If necessary, you can come for just part of the camp.  We promise we will not ‘drop you in it’ and this is an excellent chance to mix with other leaders and share ideas.  For £15, it is cheaper to spend your week with us than to stay at home!

Conditions.  Each unit must provide an adult leader.  Explorers must be invested members of their Unit and aged 14 -17, with no one reaching their 18th birthday during the camp (ie date of birth must be after 2 Nov 1995.)  Some of the courses need prior experience so please be sure to read the guidance notes carefully to avoid embarrassment to your Explorers and our instructors.

Options.  Explorers can apply for:

Activities camp (75 places): a challenging variety of dinghy sailing; kayaking; navigation and displacement power boat work in the Solent; a day at an outdoor activity centre; Naval activity; and map work and orienteering.

RYA competent crew course (5 places max).  Head out to sea and cruise the South coast, literally to ‘learn the ropes’.

RYA seamanship skills and sailing with spinnakers (8 places).  We aim to offer both these modules to build up dinghy sailing skills.  Sign up if you like the phrase, ‘3-sail screaming reach!’ (weather dependent.)

RYA powerboat level 2 course (12 places).  Learn boat handling skills in a variety of power boats.

RYA safety boat course (6 places).  Applicants must be at least 16 years and already hold power boat level 2.  Learn how to support other water activities.

BCU 2* (12 places).  The course includes: improved paddling techniques; recovery from capsize; self rescue and helping others; journey across Portsmouth Harbour.

How to apply - Explorers.  The ESL or unit representative needs to save the attached entry form, complete it and send it using the instructions on the form together with a deposit of £90.
